Fun vs. Funny

Hi,

I cant help noticing a lot of confusion on the worksheets between fun and funny.  Many worksheets use funny when they mean fun.

Here are the definitions from the free dictionary:

Fun is defined as

1. A source of enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure.

2. Enjoyment; amusement: have fun at the beach.

3. Playful, often noisy, activity

funny is defined as

a. Causing laughter or amusement

So when something makes you laugh, its funny.  When you find something amusing, its fun.

So, are you a fun teacher or a funny teacher?

Fun is a noun, funny is an adjective.
A teacher is funny.

Fun is now used as an adjective, too. My students frequently tell me that I am a fun (and sometimes funny) teacher.

You should strive to be a fun teacher, and this can include being funny.

BTW as Bruce pointed out fun is also an adjective and it has become more and more common to see funner and funnest. Just goes to show how language evolves.
