"Latest" or "recent"?

Hi, my friends!

Please help me explain the differences b/w "recent" and "latest" in the following sentence. The answer is "recent" but I wonder why "latest" is not:
"Thirteen-year-olds do  not spend as much money as their parents suspect at least not according to the findings of a ......... survey, Money and Change"

Thank you!

I think that it is not "latest" because "latest" refers to the last survey done. On the contrary, "recent" may refer to one survey of; for example, 3 or 4 years before. I mean a survey carried out in 2009 or 2010.

I hope it helps you!

To add to Melissa s explanation, in English, we always use "the" with superlatives such as "latest." Since your original sentence uses "a," you would use "recent."
