What is the best variant to fill in the gap "died" or "has  died"?

Died. Once you mention the time, it s past simple.

the key word here to determine the tense (past simple "died" BTW) is ago

don t be confused by just as it is part of a phrase here and it has the meaning "only", not "recently" which would require the present perfect tense form.
