Is sheet an old word?

Hi, Is the word sheet an old word to use? e.g. Take out a sheet to write the words. Regards, :)

it s not an old word but for the pupils it s an odd word and can make giggle (in their mind they hear "shit" i guess) and i would not use it with teens... i use "a piece of paper" instead, although i use "worksheet" quite a lot...

In the US, at least, we wouldn t say "Take out a sheet". Not because "sheet" is an old word, but because we say "a sheet of paper". If you say "sheet" alone, it means a bed covering.

I agree with Bruce. A sheet can mean many things; a bed sheet, a sheet of paper, a sheet of metal, a sheet of plastic.

From Wikipedia

Sheet may refer to: A flat piece of cloth, paper, or other material Bed sheet, a piece of cloth used to cover a mattress

A piece of paper Balance sheet, a financial summary of assets and liabilities

Sheet music, a form of musical notation

A slang term for one pound sterling or similar currency in the United Kingdom

Sheet metal

The playing surface in the sport of curling

An ice sheet, a mass of glacier ice

A Cheat-sheet, a concise set of notes used for quick reference

A kind of complex plane in mathematics

A level or section of an early video game (particularly single screen arcade games)

A kind of dialog box in graphical user interfaces

Sheet (sailing), a rope, cable or chain used to control a sail

You just need to be more specific. :-)
