Question about an expression

Hello everybody, I hope you all had some great summer holidays and are back to work full of energy ;)
I was just reading an article and came across a sentence, I would like to ask you something about

"Acknowledging your childs proper speech will go a long way toward encouraging him to use suitable words in the future"

The expression go a long way", is that in the meaning of .. it will take a lot of time or is it more like "in the long run". Is there any synonym, that would make the sentence more clear, maybe?

Thanks a lot in advance :) Have a great day
Hugs
Sara
