Are there any rules to use hyphens in the compound adjectives?

Hi,

I want your help and opinion.

Are there any rules to use hyphens in the compound adjectives ?

e.g.

bad-tempered
first-class
second hand

on the contrary, there are some adjectives are written without hyphens such as:
well known ?

Are there any rules to give to students to follow?

What is the answer if they ask when we use hyphens and when we don t???

Thanks a lot in advance
:)
