they are !!!

Hi,

I read an article about horses on a website.
This part from it :

The horse has a high head, a long neck and a strong body. It has long hair on its beautiful neck. They are called mane.

The question:

Why they are are used not it is ???

Thanks a lot in advance

Don t forget that not everything you read on the internet is correct. There are actually two mistakes in that short sentence. It should read, "It is called a mane".

Lions and animals have HAIRS, not HAIR..
The correct statement is, like other users suggested, THEY ARE CALLED A MANE..

Actually carmeladima, horses have hair, not hairs.

We say that animals have fur but for a few animals, like horses, it is referred to as hair.  Sometimes we might say we have some pet hairs on us, like on our clothing.  Otherwise it is hair or fur, depending on the animal, but generally fur.
