WOD - Word of the Day Competition Revisited / Revived
  |

The Word of the Day competition died out a while ago - or almost, much to the regret of a number of really creative people here. . Some members encouraged me to revive it. Here we go.
  For our new members:
Every day (or every two days), you get a long, complicated English word and everybody is invited to find a definition for it.
The point is NOT to find the correct definition or explanation, - anybody can google complicated words, but to find a creative, inventive, maybe crazy but plausible explanation. For example: We do not want to read here that ........................................ "Podobromhidrosis" ........................................................... is a medical term  for  ......................................................................................"smelly feet", .......................... which it acutally is, but some crazy theory or story about what the word might mean in a parallel universe.
So here is the word for Friday, January 3rd :
  ...........................................................Rhinotillexomania

It has come out at last, elderberrywine! Rhinotillexomania is your ex-mania. Elderberry wine is your present mania! Before you used to drink the famous South African rhino wines (white rhino & red rhino), you liked to drink them till the bottle runs dry... Oh, now we ll call you our forum wine sipper

							Rhino: slang for money
till: a drawer in a cash register
exo-: outside
mania: an obsession

So, quite obviously, rhinotillexomania is a condition suffered by robbers of banks and convenience stores, who want nothing more than to take the money in the tellers or cashiers tills out of the drawers and into the robbers own pockets. |

Wow, I can t believe this craze made it to ESLp already. (actually, elederberrywine being from Germany makes the jump from Holland not too big)
Rhinotillexomania  is the latest exercise craze to hit Holland/
Rhino- is of course short for Rhinoceros
Till - is short for tillen or lifting in Dutch
exo - stands for exercising
mania - is of course a craze.

Rhinotillexomania is the lates craze on "Strong Man"- shows. After dwarf throwing and wife hurling, now they try to lift rhinoceri. Of course they start with new-borns but the idea is to work your way up to lifting full grown rhinoceri.

Rhinotillexomania is an obsession, of course; a serious mania. It is the compulsion to approach cats whose tails make an acute angle to the body. The optimum angle that the rhinotillexomaniac is seeking is 22 degrees. This cannot be gauged just by looking, nor by the use of a protractor because the cat may move the tail. The rhinotillexomaniac has to feel the tail and the cat body. They can never be sure of the exact angle, so they are doomed to repeat their cat-bothering behaviour for as long as they live.

							@moody moody,
Indeed. The stong man competitions received some bad publicity and were frowned upon by the more civilized parts of the population. Dwarf throwing, or midget tossing, as it is known in some places was declared against the law,

and less and less women were willing to have themselves be carried/thrown in televised competetions.

In an attempt to sophisticate the competitions and make them more acceptable to the public again, this new craze of rhinotillexomania was introduced. It is indeed based on the famed Milo of Croton. (linking it to the classics to reduce snobbish frowns)The bull was replaced by a rhinoceros in order to make it look more exotic.
