Ideas for small mixed class

Hello fellow teachers,

Next week I will start teaching a class of 5 adults with a big range of ability (ISLPR 0+ up to 2), obviously they will have to do some activities separately according to their ability but I am struggling for ideas for things they could do together... help?!

Thanks in advance,
Ibu Lulu

Hi Ibu Lulu

The trick is finding activities where you can create some different level worksheets/instructions.  I havent been in this situation (yet) but here are some suggestions for you to consider:

1. You could do popular Australian song classics and create
- different level cloze activities
- different level reading texts with comprehension activities that relate to the history of the song/group
- extension activities for higher level learners involving research relevant to the song
- grammar activities based on lyrics (eg: lower levels look for nouns, higher levels look for other parts of speech)
- writing - lower levels write a few sentences, higher levels write an opinion

Suggested songs:
- Downunder - Men at Work
- True Blue - John Williamson
- Treaty - Yothu Yindi

2. Same as above but adapt to cooking/recipes for traditional Australian foods (eg: lamingtons) or cultural foods based on your students cultures

3. You could do activities where higher level learners have to give clear instructions to lower level learners to follow

4. You could do activities involving maps where you create different level worksheets.  Lower level learners might have to identify landmarks and travel from point A to b.  Higher level learners have to read co-ordinates, scales, direction as in NW, NE etc, travel more complicated routes, give directions etc

Cheers
