Generally, we eat soup.  It would be considered rather rude to drink it (like a glass of water for example)

I know that in Chinese people say "drink soup" because it is a liquid. But in English the food in a plate (including liquid food) should be eaten. We drink beverages out of a glass, mugs, cups, bottles etc. (e.g. tea, juice, coffee).  But we eat soup because it is in a plate and we should use a spoon/chopsticks/knife/fork. Sometimes we do not use table-ware e.g. when we eat chips or pancakes, but they are eaten step by step and they are not liquids. So we usually eat step by step, but when we drink we can do it even in one go without using any table-ware.  Sometimes you can say "drink soup" in English but it will mean that a person doesn t use a spoon/chopsticks. To drink soup means to take a plate in hands and to drink the soup by holding the plate in hands. It is rather impolite. If a person uses a spoon or any other table-ware (chopsticks, a knife) s/he eats soup. So people usually eat soup. In other words: drink beverages (tea, coffee, juice, milk, etc), eat anything else, including soup.

in French we also say "eat your soup" ("mange ta soupe") because soups over (edit: gosh what a mistake!!!) here are usually quite thick and are served in a soup plate rather than a bowl.
But we have broth we can say "drink" ("bois ton bouillon") because we can actually drink it out of a bowl, you really don t need a spoon :)
so my question is, if you eat a soup, do you drink a broth???

Agree with the others - eat soup from a dish with a spoon, but drink it if it is in a mug or a paper cup. It is rarely said though, because normally we have soup. If you are talking to your child, you might say finish your soup .

@elojolie274,
What Lynne said goes for broth, too. You eat it from a bowl with a spoon or drink it from a mug or cup. Or, as Sonn said, you can drink it (impolitely) from a bowl or soup plate without a spoon.
