There s an interesting article here from Kathy Stein-Smith on what she calls "The US Foreign Language Deficit" (I came across it in Babel magazine recently - well worth a read, by the way):

As she s pointed out elsewhere, it s not just the Yanks: it s a global Anglophone phenomenon.

We Americans have some ideas of how other people see us, but we also have many stereotypes for other Americans. I m going to write about the stereotypes I am familiar with as though they are true just to avoid awkward conditional statements. I categorically deny that the stereotypes are true of all members of the groups.

Southerners are "conservative, fundamentalist Christian, ignorant, racist, gun-lovers." They are also "polite, friendly, and love to host barbecues."

Floridians are "old and crazy." They also "welcome tourists."

New Yorkers are "rude, always in a hurry, and arrogant." They are also "focused and love unions."

New Englanders "don t talk much and are aloof." They are also "stoic."

Midwesterners are "nave and rather insular." They are also "very community-oriented and love American football."

Texans are very much like Southerners, but they also "believe that Texas is better than other states and like big things."

Alaskans and people from the Rocky Mountain states are "conservative, isolated, and self-sufficient."

Californians are "liberal, out-of-touch, rich, and crazy."
