Hey,
Work with senteces you must be sure about what tense you really want to report the time:
They had an exam that day but they didn īt study for it "-So this the right one .
Because as I could understand this sentece is the right one for reporting past tense.

It īs a little complicated. Sophia is right that the second one should be "They had an exam that day but they hadn īt studied for it."
 
For the first sentence, the past continuous probably indicates that the test would be later that day, so the sentence is correct.
