Passive Voice

Hi there Grammar Enthusiasts,

Are these sentences in the passive voice or are the past participles working as adjectives?

Trujillo is located in Northern Peru.  It is known for its special cuisine.

Thanks very much,
Esther

They are working as adjectives (Help describing Trujillo s location and why it is known). There is not any direct object as to form the passive voice. :)

Well , I agree with Sandrami60 just in the first sentence . In my opinin , the second one is an example of what is called "impersonal passive " . the active voice would be "They know it ( a city, town ...) for its special cuisine " . Impersonal passive structures normally start with " it s known, they re supposed ... ) Hope it helps Flori

Agreed Smile

The first one looks like a passive sentence, however the pp is acting as an adjective. The second sentence is a type of passive sentence.

I m sorry to contradict you, Florimago, but the second sentence can t be impersonal passive, as these structures always include an infinitive: e.g. It is known to have excellent cuisine. However,  this sounds a bit odd. So I would definitely prefer the sentence with "It is known for... "
"It is known for..." is definitely a passive construction.

Isa2, yes you re right , , but not always introducing a full infinitive but sometimes a "that clause" (it s known that they have an excellent cuisine ) . Anyway, a long time I didn t deal with this topic and I got a little confused . Passive construction definitely !!!
