Certainly, mother tongue is important. Particularly when it is less and less spoken in the world. An American headmaster told a friend of mine - who makes her children learn French as she has been living in the USA - "What ? French is still spoken ? How is it possible ?"
In fact we are in a world where the différences are making (at least I want to think so) people more open-minded. Mother tongue : yes AND other languages to better appreciate our such both small and unexpected world !
