Desease or illness? Help!!!!!

I ve read so many definitions of these two words but I still don t know the difference between illness and disease. For example, parkinson is a desease, but why not an illness? But you can have a long illness... I really don t know.

Can someone explain it to me?

Thanks and have a wonderful weekend!!!!!

Hi Mar,

I suggest you should use http://www.wordreference.com/ the message board - it s easier and quicker to gain any linguistic knowledge.

Have a nice day

When you are referring to a specific "illness" that is serious - like cancer - it is a disease... If it is something obscure or just not mentioned, i.e. - you don t know what it is you usually call it an "illness..." (although disease can also be used if it is serious...)

Example:

Cancer is a horrible disease. My mother died from that terrible disease (or illness) ...

She died from an unknown illness (and you could technically use disease here too.)

ALSO, illness is more "poetic." in a way .. "She languished away from an unnameable illness..."
