It isn �t actually wrong, but we wouldn �t call a tornado exceptional. We usually use that adjective for good things, such as an exceptional student, an exceptional performance, etc.

Try "An exceptionally strong tornado hit the town last night." This changes the adjective exceptional into the adverb exceptionally, which can mean very unusually.. This also corrects the spelling of "th" to "the."
