CONFUSED

Hello, dear colleagues! I have been playing these map quizzes online and something is puzzling me:
The instruction says either
Click on (Nigeria) OR Click on THE Gambia/Congo/Central African Republic.

I kind of understand the last one, but not  "the Gambia" or "the Congo".  Why would that be? Thanks for your replies in advance.

It must refer to the names of rivers not the countries

In UK English, "the" is used before:
- countries which contain "Kingdom" or "Republic" in their names (the UK, the Czech Republic, the Central African Republic)
- plural countries (the Philippines, the Bahamas, the UAE, the USA)
- the Gambia and the Congo (I think this is because they are named after rivers).
