Dear colleagues , I would like to know what �s the difference between the phonetic symbol �i � as in the word happy and � I � as in kid ? I have always wondered to see those symbols . Looking forward to a reply |

Hi Racim, There are actually three types of [ i]- vowel sounds that we can distinguish according to their length. it is difficult for foreigners to distinguish them. Words like kid, sip, hit and sit have the shortest version of [I] sound. it is a capital I without a point above. There is a medium-length version of this sound written in a lower case [i]. This can be found in words such as happy, angry, busy... . The third type is the longest one and it is written like this [i:] and is found in words like see, seek, knee... I hope this can be helpful to you.

Mr. TITA gave an excellent answer, but I �ll add that a native speaker would probably not try to make a distinction between the last two of them. There is also the sound of "I" in "nice" and "light" which we call "long I". I don �t know the phonetic symbol for it. Bruce |
