Plz help me identify the mistake in the sentence A large number of people were killed although homes and highways collapsed. Thanks

Hi!
 
I think the mistake is in "altough" because it makes a contrast where there isn �t one.
I would say something like this: A large number of people were killed as homes and highays collapsed.
But I think there may be other possibilites, so let us hope that another colleague may help you.

You are wanting to show that the deaths are the result of the collapse.  -- So the language of cause and effect is needed --
 
"as a result", "because", "so", "With", "Consequently"
 
Many people died as the result of homes and highways collapsing.
 
Many people died because homes and highways collapsed.
 
Homes and highways collapsed so many people died.
 
With the collapse of highways and homes, many people died.  
 
Homes and highways collapsed. Consequently, many people died.
