If you have been given advance payment for something, then you draw that money out (of the bank).

Depends on the context. If you are talking about money then, what Lynne said. If you are talking about progress, I would say "exploit" would cover it in most cases. Could you elaborate?

I had better have written the context. This is the full statement.

"when Columbus sailed west from Spain in 1942 in pursuit of the riches of the Far East, he ................recent advances in navigation and age-old geopgraphical knowledge.

a) gave away

b) drew on

c) put forward

d) brought about

e) kept off

The answer is supposed to be drew on but I couldn �t make it

Christopher Columbus, (Cristoforo Colombo), was an Italian sailor, navigator, and explorer, who sailed from Spain to the Americas.

Columbus was able to benefit from the knowledge gained from the improvements in modern navigation methods, (of his time, 1492); plus ancient geographical knowledge about the world in general.
