Is this correct: "The software tries to avoid running the simulator as many turns as possible" ?

This sentence is weird to me, is it grammatically correct? If not, is there any suggestion?

I agree with zoe. If the word "turns" does happen to be appropriate for the software, then a preposition is necessary, such as "The software tries to avoid running the simulator for as many turns as possible".
