Could you help me please?

Hi everybody, Im studying with my students on Ruby Bridges. Next week, were going to watch some extracts of the movie. But I have a problem with one word I dont know how to translate it. Can you help me? The protesters chant "2468 we dont want to integrate, 8642 we dont want a chigeroo". Chigeroo how can I translate it or explain it to my students? Thanks for answering and have a good evening. SoSo

Youve got me on this one. I tried to research it a little, but came up with basically nothing. Im guessing its a play on words (chigger / Ni&&er/ zoo ?), butn can treally give you anything definitive. It does appear to be a real "playground chant" that was used in the work, but I dont know its roots (sadly, Texas and the deep South had very open and accepted racism in those times).

Sorry I couldnt help more, your question is very intriguing, maybe some of our other literature and slang experts could help.

Hello Sophia,
Im working on Ruby Bridges too at the moment, the word youre looking for is "jigaboo" :Another racial slur referring to black people. Comes from a Bantu (African) word meaning meek, or servile (i.e. a slave).
