What is this or who is this?

Hello everyone!
Would you use who or what for a witch, a gost, a monster ...?
Thanks!

In my opinion, it depends on the situation.

If youŽre showing a picture book or a flashcard to your children, you ask "What is this?"

If youŽre interested in a person wearing a witch, ghost or monster costume, you use "Who", like this -
Who played the Wicked Witch in the original "The Wizard of Oz" movie?

IŽll add to KohaiŽs excellent answer.

If the intended answer is a name, then use "who". If the intended answer is a thing, use "what".
