Verb suggest

Hi there, Today I have been told by a workmate of mine that the verb suggest plus past simple is a common structure in English. He gave me this example, the doctor suggested I stayed in bed for several days. I asked him if the sentence should not be:the doctor suggested (that) I (should) stay in bed... I have found few books mentioning my colleagues structure. Is it correct? Is it common usage among English speakers? Thanks in advance.

No, it isnt correct and it isnt common, although I have heard it spoken a few times over the years.
