A real challenge!!

Can you help me? Im starting a new course where I have to teach teenagers with no knowledge of English, basic language skills and at the same time ELECTRONICS. Ill be in the same room with the electronic teacher and Ill have to relate all their English learning to their practices. Any suggestion? I found it really challenging!! (I havent learnt elecronics!!Confused)

Hi, Andrea!

If I were you, Id first read something about Electronics in order to understand what its about. You can try this site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronics

You could also look for glossaries connected to this field.
http://www.nuhorizons.com/glossary/basicelecconcepts.asp
http://www.educypedia.be/resources/glossarieselectronic.htm
http://search.conduit.com/Results.aspx?q=basic+electronics+glossary&meta=all&hl=es&gl=ar&SearchSourceOrigin=3&gil=es-AR&SelfSearch=1&ctid=CT2215634&octid=CT2215634

Another thing you could do, is ask the teacher of Electronics, whether he/she has any material in English (you could use this for your classes).
Teachers of technical subjects usually have manuals or other written material in English, so you should ask them.

And DONT WORRY so much!!!
You are not supposed to teach Electronics - youll be the language facilitator - but it would be a good idea that you have some prior-knowledge on this subject....so as not to feel so lost! Wink

As classes go by, I think youll feel more confident!
Good luck!Smile

hello!
i think you have to adapt your syllabi with electronics. English for Specific Purpose (ESP) would be better for you as an approach...it s not necessary to know electronics, but basic elctronic jargon...but first things first: there would be no teaching without any basics of english lge. so start with some communication, grammar (unfocused on) and of course functions (telleing the time, asking/giving advice...)
and good luck
