In Canada we use sandbox.  I have never heard anyone referring to a sandbox as a sandpit.  I would tend to agree with Linda and Douglas that sandpit sounds more like a sand quarry.  It �s quite interesting to discover that a sandpit is in fact a sandbox.

I just wanted to add my comment, I �ve always used sandpit in my school, its British American and its the area of sand in which children played in :)
