I have a question about Reflexive  pronounces.

As you know :We use reflexive pronouns to show that we are talking about the same person or thing. And we use them with the preposition by to show that someone does something by himself without help.

In the student s book , there are these sentences :
He drove there himself.
 They cooked the food themselves.
He wrote those letters himself

So, why there is no by

Are they right ?

Hi,

It is confusing, but when it is very clear what you mean, you do not have to put the "by." Putting an unnecessay "by" makes your writing too wordy and less efficient. I hope this helps.

well, i had another version of it, and now i m super curious.

as i understood it:

he drove there himself - would mean that he did it himself, not another person, like, he did it personally.
he drove there by himself - would mean that he was the one driving, but that he was the only one in the car or somehow doing it alone (by himself :)

yes, you re right, it isn t all that clear.

anyone could help a bit more?

I completely agree. Good response. The beginning pronoun tells who performed the action.
He drove there himself.  He drove without anyone helping him.  He drove there by himself could mean he was all alone. No one else was in the car.
