A doubt: what day is it? or what is the date today?

Hello everyone, I have this simple doubt. Is it correct to say both of them? Can I also say... What is the day today? instead of date?

I thought the difference could lie on "day" referring to the day of the week we are in. While "date" may refer to the number, the date, as well as the day.

So, I guess that when I ask my sts to write the date on the blackboard it is accuarate to say...what is the date today?

Could anyone tell me please?

Thank you !

Regards
