The Beatles - A Day in the Life (Past Simple Tense)
I used this song with 7th graders in Chile to help them practice the past simple tense, both regular and irregular. I have 4 different activities including listening and filling in verb, conjuating verbs from past to present and present to past. As well as listening and ordering sentances and filling in opposites.
I went through the different sections one at a time. Having them listen to each part on its own 3 times while they completed the activity for that part. (Part 1A i gave them a few minutes to complete after doing Part 1). Then at the end I let them listen to the whole song in its entirety.
The song is almost exclusively in past tense, so the worksheet is easy to modify based on what verbs your students may have already learned. I picked out some irregulars we had been working on in class, but you can modify it to use verbs your students are more comfortable with.
I was worried the song would be too strange for my students, but they really seemed to enjoy it, especially the dramatic instrumental buildup in the middle. And they started singing along without me even instructing them to do so!
