Song: Father and Son by Cat Stevens
This is a great song to illustrate the topic of family relationships, integrating the skills of reading, listening and speaking in quite a motivating way.
Suggested procedure: First, students read the lyrics to check they know the vocabulary and say what the song is about. They then listen and complete the blanks with a word or phrase. Before checking in open class, have them compare their answers in pairs and listen for a second time if necessary.
This listening comprehension activity is followed by a discussion on family relationships: elicit the meaning of “generation gap” and get students to share their own personal experience and opinions in small groups.
