The Dugong (Sea Cow)
The dugong is a mammal. It likes to eat seagrass. Because people hunted them, their numbers are declining.
Dugongs are classed as protected animals in the UAE.
Dugongs lived in abundant numbers in the Arabian Gulf in the past. Now, they are on the brink of extinction. Dugongs die because they are sometimes entangled to the fishing nets.
More than 5300 dugongs are found in the Arabian Gulf. 75 of dugongs live in Abu Dhabi coast.
These animals are under the threat of extinction. Many research centers and volunteers work together to save these beautiful animals.
