Journalistic / News Writing Features
This worksheet is useful for intermediate to advanced students (I usually make this a small-group assignment) in identifying important genre features of journalistic / news writing. It helps them find 5W1H clues in Summary Lead, distinguish hard news from soft news, develop their understanding of the structure of most news stories, and includes a brief MLA referencing exercise.
I use this as a lead-in to a global issues project where student groups research a global issue then do a presentation on how to solve that issue as if they are world leaders.
