End of the World Discussion Activity
This is a speaking activity that promotes higher level of contemplation and thinking. You can do multiple things with this activity:
1. Identify the pros and cons of the candidates. You can write this or discuss it.
2. Think-Pair-Share. Instruct the students to choose 3 candidates that they´d both take and would NOT take and write down why. They then talk to the person next to them, sharing their responses and justifications. Finally, facilitate an all classroom discussion going through each candidate. Those who are FOR and AGAINST the candidates can stand on each side of the room, whilst those who are neutral can remaining seated in the middle. At the end of the discussion, students can come to a final decision (they are encouraged to change their opinions during the discussion component). Make the students vote for who they want. The top three candidates win.
3. You can reward students who present strong cases for (or against) candidates. Encourage them to use high modality words, variation in tone, emotion etc.
