Scattegories (One) Scattegories (One)

A vocabluary game that my kids LOVE!! It´s great for new classes if you want to get an idea of their lexicon, or it works well as a long filler! Make 3-5 teams of at least 2 Ss each. Pass out the worksheets and tell them to write their team name ONLY at the top, this will give you time to make the game grid on the board. Write the categories across the top, then make like a table grid of empty boxes....write the team names in the far left column. Explain that you will give them a letter, and they must think of a word for each category that starts with that letter. The first time around I always elicit an example or two before we start and write it in a box. Then explain if another team has the same answer, NEITHER team gets a point for that category....so they have to think of a unique word. I like to choose easy letters like R, S, T, L, etc. I usually tell them there is a 2-minute time limit for each round, but will just countdown from 10 seconds when I it looks like they´re all almost finished. It´s important then to collect the papers and write the answers on the board for each category. It´s fun to make it all dramatic if teams get the same answer. Or if for scary animal one team writes something like "rabbit", you can ask the rest of the class "Is a rabbit scary?? Yes or No?" And they all booo, so you don´t give a point for rabbit, lol. They looove this game and I would allow at LEAST 30 minutes to play it. But anyway it´s something you can come back to from time to time, I´ve even had classes make their own cattegories after they´re familiar with how to play. :-)
