Being precise Being precise

Students read a paragraph which contains many imprecise words, which is adapted from a few real online texts. They are then encouraged to think of alternatives or synonyms, which could involve the use of a thesaurus. Finally, they must rewrite the text, eliminating all vague words. The purpose of the exercise is for students to become aware of imprecise usage, recognize it in text, and develop the ability to correct this.
