A Backstage Crew at the Theatre
A reading comprehension exercise that I use as preparation for my "Flight Crew" reading comprehension evaluation. I teach the students to look at the text at least three times: one time just looking at the title and photos and predicting what the text will be about, one time reading and noting general points, and one time noting details. I think...

Asking Permission in the classroom
A simple activity that the kids like. Good for pairs or threes. - Print the large words on heavy paper or card. I do them on different colours but have put them in print and cursive so you dont have to. Make enough for one between two plus some extra for students who need to work alone. You will reuse these. - Make a double-sided copy of the sen...

Counting Colourful Buttons
I use this worksheet in grade 2 after doing the story "Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons." I review colours before we do the worksheet. The word bank helps the kids review the spelling of number words. The instructions should be pretty self-explanatory. Have fun!

Firefighter Reading Comprehension
This reading comprehension exercise is part of my reading unit on teamwork. There are a couple of other reading exercises in the same format and an evaluation about a flight crew. I generally find a YouTube clip showing firefighters in action or an out-of-control fire hose to introduce the reading. Have fun!

Instructions Song
A song for teaching classroom instructions and a picture dictionary for practising them. Sing the song to the tune of "Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes" (NOT the tune that sounds like "London Bridge," but the other tune). Use gestures that make sense to you and your students. This song can become a good warm-up routine for the start of class.

Listening Comprehension: Sky Brown
In this exercise, students learn how to listen to a video without panicking because they dont understand everything. They expect to listen several times (the exercise says 3 but I generally do 5 or so) and to discern information at a deeper level of detail each time. I play the video from 0-2:30 at a speed of 0.75 and repeat until they feel confid...

Pachisi Listening/Reading Exercise
This exercise practices vocabulary and structures used in board game instructions and prepares students to create their own board games. It can be a listening comprehension -- project or copy and distribute the board image and then read the text slowly and clearly twice -- or it can be a reading exercise. The exercise recycles ideas used in the ...

Reading Comprehension: A Team on an Airplane
This is a reading evaluation for the end of a unit on teamwork. I hope to upload the other three practice exercises over the next week. It can also be used as a reading comprehension exercise. Things to know: Part 1 is intended to be done as a warm-up to activate prior knowledge and get students thinking about the text BEFORE they read. I am no...
