"Heartless" by Kanye West
I used this listening activity in a mixed-level English class. "Heartless" is a good song to teach ESL because the words are slow and it contains a lot of slang. I used this as an alternative to dictation, which my students hate. Also included are the songs lyrics.

American High School Cliques
This is a worksheet for intermediate-level students. I taught a thematic unit about American high school life (in contrast to Korean high school life). It is based on the stereotypes of cliques in American high schools. My students had a better understanding of different kinds of students after doing this worksheet.

Beatles: Hello, Goodbye
This is a worksheet for the song "Hello, Goodbye" by the Beatles. I used to share culture of the 1960s and introduce great rock bands. The song is very easy to understand and great to incorporate greetings in English. Enjoy!

BeeGees: Stayin Alive

Black Sabbath - Iron Man
My class listened to the song "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath. I played this for them after watching the "Iron Man 2" trailer. This is a great, classic rock song with slow lyrics that students can easily understand. Students should fill in the words from the box as they hear them. I played a youtube video with English lyrics for students to check t...

Britney Spears - 3
The content of this song is a bit controversial, but I cannot stop my students from singing it! I made two different worksheets to Britney Spears song "Three". The first page is for lower level and has the lyrics for students to fill in. The second page is for higher-level students with no lyrics. Higher-level has to listen carefully and fill ...

Dinner Party Icebreaker
I adapted this worksheet from one my colleague gave me. I changed many of the questions and will use it as an icebreaker in a three-week intensive language course. Students make two lines of chairs facing each other. They talk to the partner in front of them about Topic #1 for one minute. The teacher says, "Change!" and the students move to the...

Elvis: Jailhouse Rock
I used this to introduce the 1950s and rock-n-roll to students. It is a popular, fun song from Mr. Presley. My students enjoyed listening to Elvis and learning what "rock and roll" is. They also enjoyed the "jailbird" and "jailhouse" vocabulary. Enjoy!

Find Your Partner Cards
I made these speaking cards for a game described on Daves ESL Cafe website called "Find Your Partner". I used information that my students shared about themselves from our first class. Give students three or four minutes to memorize their card. Take the cards away and have them recite what their card said. They must say it to each person in th...

Find Your Partner: Greetings
This is another version of the "Find Your Partner" game. Cut out the cards and distribute them to students. Students must walk around the room and find their partner that has the appropriate response. Cards on the left are the first partner; cards on the right are the matching answers. Great activity to get your students moving around and speak...
