I use this poster to help explain why there are silent e�s on the end of English words.
This allows the children to see the purpose.
These rules apply to English words only, not Indian, aboriginal, german etc. It also allows the children to think about the origin of the word.

The er�s that occur in English words
I use the sentence "Her first nurse works early on the journey." to show all the children all of the different sounds of er. When they want to spell correctly and are not sure of which er to use I can direct them to the right one eg the ir of first for the word bird.
