Long Lost Family-Teacher’s Guide Activity Time: 25-35 minutes Level: Beginner Objectives: Personal Information Questions/First Day Level Assessment (This activity can also be used to create groups.) Steps: 1. Introduce conversation starters. 2. Introduce/Brainstorm first time conversation questions: Questions (A) Answers (B) Answers (A) What do you do? I am a ---. Oh really? Where do you work/go to school? I work at---./I go to school at ---. Wow. Where are you from? I am from ---. Me too! What do you do for fun? I like ---./I enjoy --–ing. Uh-huh. What kind of (movies, music, sports, etc.) do you like? I like ---./I enjoy ---. That must be ---. Do you have any brothers or sisters? I have --- sisters and --- brothers. So, how do you know ---? We met at ---./We --- together. (work, exercise, went to school, go to church, take --- lessons, etc.) How about you? 3. Explain that this activity will allow students to practice and asking for and giving personal information. 4. Distribute identity cards. Explain that students are at a party and must mingle to find their long lost family members. They will be able to recognize them from their jobs and hobbies. Once the students have found all of their family members they can sit down together. (Note: It’s easy to check family members since all of their names will end in the same sound.) 5. Alternative: If the teacher wants to add a little more structure to the activity, they can create concentric circles, a setup where half of the students stand in a circle facing outward and the other half faces them in a circle facing inward. Once students have asked each other all the questions they have practiced, they can rotate clockwise.
