listening to words, for pronunciation
Students can do this activity in a computer room with the teacher or in the class room on hard copy. The teacher covers her mouth and states a word and students need to write what they hear. You could also do it without covering your mouth for the first time. It sharpens their listening and assists with recognizing pronunication differences.

I find sharing personal stories with my students work. This one works very well. Students read the text, answer questions, They then complete the cloze without looking. They then answer questions about their family and use their answers to write about their own family. Great for those who say they can�t write.

If you don�t understand what Aussies are saying they may be speaking in Aussie slang. Students can read the story, match the vocab with meaning, answer questions, and rewrite in normal English. It is very challenging for them. Use the Aussie slang dictionary online to enhance understanding.
