Tex Avery Cartoon - Symphony in Slang
This excellent cartoon by Tex Avery is a great teaching tool for upper-intermediate and advanced students because of its huge assortment of slang and idioms like being short-haned and raining cats and dogs. It is available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot92Yfovvvg http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x45xby_mgm-cartoon-symphony-in-slang-1951_s...

Thank You, Mam - Questions
Langston Hughes is best known as a poet of the Harlem Renaissance during the 1920s, but here are some discussion questions to a fabulous short story written in the 1950s. As a follow-up (homework, for example), I ask students to write a letter from the boy to the woman 10 or 15 years after the story takes place. Send me a private message with yo...

The Inbetweeners: The Field Trip
This was a hugely successful British sitcom about 4 British teenagers, but because of the language and references to sex, it is appropriate ONLY for those 18 and over. My students requested this, but because I had doubts about its appropriateness, I did a survey (included) to see if anyone would object. As a warm-up, I had the students work in gro...

The Joys of Hugging
The purpose of this FUN exercise is to get students to ask a lot of yes/no questions to find out the meaning of "stogging" (hugging). Pass out 1 card to every 2 students. Give them a chance to read the card and then have them ask you yes/no questions about the meaning of "stogging," which is just a made-up word for "hugging." If they dont succeed,...

The Office: Diversity Day
Here is a worksheet for the popular American sitcom, "The Office." I begin the lesson by asking students why a company would offer diversity training. For the title I used the font Helvetica Bold, which is the same used on the TV show. I used Baskerville for the rest of the worksheet, but you may wish to change it if it doesnt all fit onto one ...

The Tell-Tale Heart - Pre-Reading ex.
Students are asked to make up a story using key words on these cards. They then tell the story to other students. Next they listen to a reading of Edgar Allen Poes "The Tell-Tale Heart" and place the cards in order as they hear them. (You can then have them read the story and study it in your normal way.)
