Word order

This is what one of my pupils has written:

"I went to Portugal on holiday in July with my family."

Could you please help me with word order? It seems a bit weird to me.

Thanks a lot!

The sentence is OK. And let him/her know this: Nice choice! :-)

Maybe could sound better in this way: My family and I went to Portugal in July for holiday.
Lets wait for the experts (natives) opinion. Ermm

If I were going to get all pedantic about it, I might suggest putting "July" at the end. It does sound OK though. I really don t think it s incorrect but I could be wrong.

According to the rules of the British grammar  "in July" should be in the beginning or at the end:

I went to Portugal on holiday with my family in July.

or

In July I went to Portugal on holiday with my family.

It depends on the enphasis of the message,, what is the most important part of the sentence...

"in July"   or  "to Portugal"

I hope it helps YOU

The rule says Place goes before Time

I agree with treinas but alexcure is most definitely right in that "in July" can go at the beginning. Like saying "At 7 o clock I get up." We don t normally speak that way but it is correct even it does sound odd. I suppose it all depends on the emphasis, as REYVAJ said before. Annoying, isn t it?

Well I would say the rule is; subject +verb+indirect object+direct object+manner+place+time, but you can put time adverbs at the beginning of the sentence.
