Ideas for teaching wrting to 3r grade (8yrs) students

good sunday to all...  i need help please.. i am running out of ideas.. the thing is that i am teaching a third grade. they are supposed to be able to write a paragraph of at least 4 sentences but they don t have the vocabulary to even write a sentence. the teacher that teaches the 1rst and second grade is not doing her job and although parents complains every year about it the director wont do anything so i have to deal with what i have. my stu.  take a test every year that measures the students and in that test they have to write a paragraph. i have tried many things and theyalready know the mechanics about the main idea, topic sentence and supporting details but when they try to write they lack  vocabulary, the grammar mistakes are big, and i really dont know what to do. can you suggest games, group work or activities to help them improve in this area. i would appreciate it very much!!

How about providing them with a "word bank" when they need to write? or else the beginning of sentences to complete?
here you can see a demo http://www.starterparagraphpunch.com/ and maybe you could create smth based on that idea.
When I first took in a third grade it would take them for ever to copy smth from the board, let alone write a paragraph. Being a secondary school teacher it was quite a challenge for me to work in the primary. And I got to tell you the problems with the spelling and sentence structures they acquire in the primary still entail them in the fifth grade.
I feel for you and I wish you the best of luck.

Edit: just remembered: we use Way Ahead in our school up to grade 6 and there are composition pages in the work book with pictures of a story and phrases to match and fill in the blanks in a paragraph and then theres a similar picture story on the same page with a different character and slightly different information and the pupils are asked to write a paragraph as a follow up to the reading/writing they have just done. That probably sounds confusing bc its always better to see than to hear a lot of times. I just hope you could make use of this gibberish  Confused

Why not create a giant board with columns : nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, prepositions...

Then ask your students to look for 10 different words for each lesson. You would accept these words and gave them 1 point for each if they are able to tell you and the class what kinds of words they found, to read it in a simple sentence (affirmative, interrogative or negative). If the sentence is right give them 1 more point. Each 100 points they will have a good vote.

Maybe you can choose a theme (school, professions...)

May be a good challenge ?

By the way, Mena has a nice printable in today s contribution about writing. You have about 45 minutes left to download it if you want it for free.

You could also start with just getting them to talk to you about the paragraph.  Start by asking what do you want to write about?  Why are you writing about it?  Get them to verbally do it, and then say "see you have just talked/spoken your paragraph, do you think you could write it down?"  I don t know anything about little ones being a secondary but I have many ESOL students in my class so that s how I start paragraphs.

Good luck :)

Maybe you can start with reading. Give them samples of writings... Wordbank, picture vocabulary wordbank is a good idea as well. Divide the vocabulary into groups - adjectives, verbs, nouns, adverbs...
How about MADLIBS?
I will tell you about my friend ........... . He / She is ............ years old. He / She likes .............. ing. His / Her favourite film is ............... . He / She is good at .............. He / She ...................... after school. He / She has got a ..............

How obout fairy-tales - writing a summary? Other students can guess - provide a list of fairy-tales...
Mother gives some food to a girl. The girl goes to forrest. She wants to visit Granny. She meets a wolf. The wolf is bad. He runs to Granny s cottage. He eats Granny. The girl visits Granny. Wolf eats the girl. Hunter kills the wolf and saves the girl and Granny. The end.

Slow learners might need to compare the structure of the English sentence with their mother tongue - twist Spanish sentences to follow the "English word order"...
I don t know if it is possible in Spanish but it helps to speak in the mother tongue and follow the English rules... And it can be fun... :-D

eg: I ask students to use pronouns in each sentence, to use "the, a, some" before nouns, to include adverbs of place and time at the end of the sentence... I ask students to pretend to be an Englishman speaking Czech. :-)
