The teachers on my staff are not native speakers.

I never said this: If it sounds incorrect to natives then it is incorrect".
 
I said that the answer they wanted to also accept didn�t sound right to me so I brought the question to the forum. 
 
Since Past Perfect wasn�t an option then the answer has to be Past Simple  and that is what I wanted to verify.
