A great activity with a class of students is to connect them to another class of students more or less the same age in another country with English as a common language, set up pairs between the two classes, and have them write weekly emails back and forth. It forces them to use English in a way that will be understood by people from another culture, but speaking about personal experiences. Obviously this can only be used if there is a computer lab available. A good way to find another classroom is through www.epals.com. First the students must set up a specific email account. Here I use gmail, but you can change it. I wrote this for Italians, so if you are in another country you will need to change part 1, #4 (this part always comes out in the local language, not in English). Also make sure once the students are in the actual registration page, that the language is set to English (there is a drop-down list at the top right of the page). Second, the use their email accounts to write to their penfriend. As time goes on, they will look forward to hearing from their friend and their letters will become more natural.
