"Self-Reliance" Pre-Reading Activity

I use this great pre-reading activity the day before my English 11 students and I read portions of Ralph Waldo Emerson´s famous essay "Self-Reliance." The instructions are one the first page, and the quotations are on the second page. Students are to choose four of Emerson´s quotations (from his essay), and practice summarizing them. Then we go through each quotation and discuss students´ interpretations. It is a good way to get them interested in Emerson, because he writes about being an individual, which teenagers can easily identify with. Enjoy!
