Campaign Project
My students do this project towards the end of our study on persuasive speech/writing. I generally do this unit in the fall (election time in the U.S.) so that there are plenty of examples of good and bad persuasive arguments as the politicians are doing their thing! The rules are that they have to choose their words carefully-they can insult the...

Current Event Report
My students have to do a current event report every week. They choose a news article and write a summary and their personal response to it. This particular class is World Literature, so they have to report on news from other countries, but this is easily modified for whatever type of news you want them to read.

Four Days In Verona
This helps students sequence the action in Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet. Theres so much action, often we forget that it all takes place in only 4 short days! This one has the first day already started, but you could take that out to make it harder/more independent. I have used this with upper elementary English learners through native English...

Frankenstein Project
I used this as an ending project after reading Mary Shelleys Frankenstein. The students has to choose different activities to come up with 100 points. I used this with novice high school students (we read an adopted version) but could easily be used with any proficiency level.

Latin American Country Project
I used this project for my high school students- English level novice to advanced. It could easily be used for lower grades as well. You could adapt it to fit any region of the world you wanted them to study- just change the box of country options! The students have to research information about a country and then create a Power Point presentati...

Literature Circle Jobs
Literature Circles are a good way for students to interact with whatever you are reading. They break into groups and each group has a job. These are my ESL adapted descriptions of each job. I have done this with novice to advanced classes-only the reading texts are different!

Mayan Gods Project
This activity can be used for Social Studies content, or for an introduction into pre-Columbian literature, as I use it. I use the same activity for another class on Greek gods (see other printable.) The students must research using encyclopedias a Mayan God/Goddess and then create a poster about it. I make them use the encyclopedias to pract...
